In September 1972 St. John's School (Elora) officially opened its doors to 60 grade 5 to grade 8 boys. The opening service was at St. John the Evangelist Church in Elora with Canon Hulse officiating, Prof Glenn Carroll as Master of Ceremonies (Board Chair) and Jim Chalmers as founding Headmaster. At that time the faculty comprised of: Jim Chalmers, Walter Langford, Malcolm Rombach, Shirley MacRae, Mark McDowell, Ramelle Hawkins, Warnock MacMillan, Ellen Melville and Madame Drown. All classes were held in "Price House" at the top of Price Street in Elora - many hours had been spent in the preceding three months converting this old house into a school. In 1981 the senior campus in Waterloo was opened and the name was changed to St. John's-Kilmarnock School. This new campus housed a co-ed facility from grade 8 to initially grade 11 and ultimately OAC, while Elora remained all boys from grade 4-8.
