Advanced Placement Program
SJK offers Advanced Placement examinations in a number of subjects, enabling students to apply for advanced standing in leading universities in Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia. Institutions grant credits, appropriate placement, or both to students who perform satisfactorily on AP Examinations.
The Advanced Placement ( AP ) program is a co-operative educational endeavour of secondary schools, colleges, and universities. It consists of examinations for highly motivated students in secondary schools.
Most of these examinations are three hours long and cover the equivalent of a full-year university course. All are administered every May at participating schools. All the examinations contain a free-response section and a multiple-choice section. The scores on the free-response sections are combined with the scores on the multiple-choice sections. The totals are then converted to the Program's 5-point scale, which is interpreted as follows:
5 = extremely well qualified
4 = well qualified
3 = qualified
2 = possibly qualified
1 = no recommendation
These grade categories are designed to reflect achievement in an AP course that is analogous to performance in a comparable university course. The purpose of AP grades is to allow participating colleges and universities to award credits, advanced placement, or both. In general, a grade of 3 or higher indicates sufficient mastery of course content to allow exemption from or credit for a university course comparable to the AP course.
In the 2008-2009 academic year, SJK will be offering assistance to students in the following AP courses in order to better prepare them for their May Advanced Placement Examinations:
