Technology & Innovation

Whether it be a laptop for conducting research or completing assignments, a digital SLR camera for reporting noteworthy events for the yearbook, or a playbook for accessing educational apps, all students have access to a variety of hardware devices that can be signed out on an individual or per-class basis.

SJK provides a high end fibre Internet connection for all students, which allows for instantaneous access to the information they need to conduct research or complete lessons in the cloud. SJK also offers support to teachers and students through a Technology for Learning specialist who helps to ensure that the technology works smoothly to enhance the learning process.

Google Apps for Education front-ended with the onSJK learning management system provides the ability for each student in the Upper School to professional communicate and collaborate with teachers and fellow students. In addition, each student has access to a personal online calendar and abundant storage space within a personal cloud-based drive. Our platform allows students and teachers alike to embrace technology in effective and sustainable ways that enhance teaching and learning.

While completing the Middle Years Programme, students explore technology by applying the design cycle to large projects involving Lego Mindstorms robotics, pinball machines, Rube Goldberg creations, and mail-merged letters to local government to name a few. During the grade 9 year in particular, SJK partners with many local businesses and educational institutions to provide rich exposure to the many facets of technology.

In the Diploma Programme, students interact with a variety of databases and software applications to support their research and learning, including flipped-classroom material in select subjects.

SJK has an active IT Committee of devoted faculty and staff who meet monthly with a focused vision to develop SJK as a leader in the innovative, creative, and ethical use of educational technology. This vision is being realized in part through our membership with Communitech, which allows students the opportunity to interact with entrepreneurs and to work and learn in the dynamic and exciting environment of the Communitech Hub.
