Learning Support Strategy at SJK
St. John’s-Kilmarnock School strives to deliver an academically rigorous education through our IB Continuum Programmes. While maintaining high expectations, we also provide assistance that ranges from teaching learning strategies such as good study habits, test taking skills, and organization and time management techniques, to supporting students with reading, writing and math development.
This dynamic approach helps provide our students with access to knowledge in ways that suit their unique needs and aids them in the process of developing their own strategies for independent learning.
As a school, we are also committed to assisting students with learning exceptionalities reach their potential in an inclusive, supportive, consistent and sustainable learning community. These statements align with SJK’s mission of supporting students in their pursuit of academic success.
Learning support services such as Learning Support Plans (LSPs) and Temporary Assistance Plans (TAPs) are designed to ensure the individual needs of students are supported through accommodations. All teachers provide accommodations for individual needs, in all classrooms. Providing this support encourages our students take ownership over their education and become advocates for their own personal success.
The SJK Strategy Support Team is committed to:
- Helping students identify areas of strength and areas of challenge
- Helping students develop learning strategies that work for them
- Helping students with organizational, time management and test taking skills
- Supporting students with reading, math and writing skill development
- Providing accommodations and assistive technology to enhance learning
- Working closely with faculty and advisors
- Communicating and meeting with parents
All students in the school are welcome to take advantage of strategy support and many students refer themselves by dropping in to schedule an appointment. Other students are directly referred by their teachers or are identified by parents as needing assistance or accommodations to achieve success.
