Academic Excellence at SJK > Upper School (Grades 7 - 12)

Welcome to the Upper School

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme for students in Grades 7 and 8, addresses the unique individual needs, talents and passions of the adolescent learner. Student self-management, critical thinking, creative expression, organizational skills and ethical decision-making are integrated into a challenging, yet supportive program. In Grades 9 and 10 the curriculum allows our students to study a common core of courses while meeting the Ontario Ministry expectations for credits at the academic level of study. The students in this program experience the benefits of a rich high school life while preparing for pre-university study in Grades 11 and 12. Students are encouraged to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and real world experiences, as well as become critical and reflective thinkers.

Students in Grades 11 and 12 are exposed to a broad-based education through the IB Diploma Programme. The wide range of courses offered at SJK, allows each student to build a personalized program that is best suited to their interests, strengths and goals. With its academic breadth, depth and rigour, our students develop skills of research, time management, problem-solving, communication and collaboration, which prepare them for the world beyond SJK as confident, independent, globally-minded learners.

SJK supports our students with an advisor system in which a teacher mentor is paired with the students throughout Grades 9 through 12 to focus on the support and development of the whole person. In addition, students benefit from the small class sizes, individualized guidance and learning support as well as a positive peer environment. Co-curricular activities and opportunities extend learning beyond the classroom add to the richness of the SJK Experience and challenge our students to GO BEYOND.

I hope you will come and discover what makes our Upper School special.
