The Great Outdoors at SJK

We are known for our campus, not only because it’s spacious and beautiful, but also because we use our campus for learning, for activities, for exploration, and for fun. Experiential learning is at the heart of what we do, and doing it outside makes all the difference. 

The Grade 7s embarked on their 24-hour Pond Study and road clean-up service project in May. The group spent 24 hours taking hourly measurements of the pond levels, water samples and engaged in an in-depth night time ecological study.

Grade 8 students were also involved in water sampling and testing, but this time at various points of the Grand River; once completed, the water samples were brought back to Wilfred Laurier University’s Centre for Cold Regions and Water Science as part of the AquaSONG project. The students worked with graduate students in various lab activities.

Our Grade 9s set off on the Geography trip to the Niagara Escarpment to explore Crawford Lake, hike Mount Nemo and Tews Falls. The students and teachers were assessing human impact on the Niagara Escarpment.

Lower School students enjoyed Outdoor Classroom Day and were engaged in outdoor-themed stories and action; water sound experiments in music; nature scavenger hunts; spelling hopscotch; water table mathematics and so much more!
