Student Reflection: A Practice in Autonomy

Matthew B.-M.
Grade 9 student Matthew B.-M. took some time to reflect on remote learning has felt. He explores the notion of increased autonomy, working at his own pace and how he feels this experience will help prepare him for the post-secondary world.
"The most enjoyable part of remote learning so far is the flexibility. I feel great doing my work throughout the day at my own pace. For students who need more time with their work, they can rewatch and reread the question/assignment as many times as they need to without impacting the pacing of learning of any of their peers. This autonomy combined with self-scheduling that happens when participating in remote learning is very novel for someone who probably won’t experience this approach to learning fully until heading to a post-secondary institution. I appreciate the glimpse I'm getting into how it would feel to build my own schedule and have more independence in my daily life.

For me, two standout courses during remote learning have been design and science. These two courses have involved transmitting the same information I would get in class, but through a variety of online tools.

I’m grateful for access to my teachers, which helps me receive detailed answers to my course questions that keeps me on track to finishing my work. A key element of remote learning is the effort my teachers put into their informational videos. Besides being well-edited to allow for cohesion of ideas presented, the creativity in them is fun and entertaining, usually incorporating their family members in ways that are engaging for us as students."
