Strategies for Success

Moving to a remote learning program represents a time of transition for everyone. Parents need to think about how to support their children, such as creating structures and routines to allow children to be successful. We encourage you to monitor and support your children’s learning, and keep the spark for learning alive.

The guidelines provided below are intended to help parents think about what they can do to help their children find success in a remote learning environment.

Helpful Hints for Parents

List of 5 items.

  • Define your child’s workspace.

A quiet place where your child can be easily monitored and assisted is advisable. Ensure the location has the required tools needed for learning. Consider setting ‘quiet times’ for learning or using noise-cancelling headphones.
  • Take an active role in your child’s learning.

We know that people learn best when they have opportunities to process their learning with others. Where possible, be available to connect with your child as they learn. If your child is struggling, encourage him or her to reach out to teachers for assistance.
  • Encourage physical activity and exercise.

Make sure your children stay active. This is vitally important to their health, wellbeing, and their learning. Think also about how your children can contribute more around the house with chores or other responsibilities.
  • Set parameters around online engagement.

As students may turn to social media to fill the need for social interaction, please continue to monitor their use and remind them to be polite, respectful, and appropriate in their communications.
  • Be mindful of your child’s stress or worry.

Help your children manage the worry, anxiety, and range of emotions they may experience. Difficult though it may be, do your best not to transfer your stress or worry to your children. They will need as much normal routine as parents can provide.
