Admission into the Primary Years Programme

A Community Of Learners

Children from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 6 begin their educational journey at SJK in our Lower School in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). SJK students are supported in developing their own voice, choice, and ownership over their own learning to become internationally-minded lifelong learners. Through this process, the community fosters the development of the attributes of the IB Learner Profile, where children are: Inquirers, Risk-takers, Thinkers and Communicators who are Knowledgeable, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Balanced and Reflective.

SJK values high standards of conduct, academic achievement, learning and teaching. We have respect for each other, our environment, traditions and ourselves. We welcome applications from students who share these values. SJK students love to learn, and we welcome motivated and passionate students who believe that SJK will help them to achieve their goals, and who want to make the most of their SJK experience, in and out of the classroom.

"SJK has a lot to offer, including simply belonging to a community that shares a set of core values and a perspective on the world. For many students, that alone is a transformative experience."
Our Kids School Review
SJK accepts and reviews applications on a rolling basis, starting on September 15 of the year before entry. Our first offers of admission are typically extended in mid-October. SJK will continue to offer admission to candidates on a first-come, first-served basis until all spaces are full.

Admission to SJK is competitive, as such, we encourage interested candidates to submit an application early. As we attract more applicants than we have spaces available, we are not able to offer admission to all candidates.

The Admissions Process

Kindergarten Admissions

Junior and Senior Kindergarten applicants will be invited to attend a Kindergarten Readiness Assessment where the prospective student has an opportunity to spend 30 minutes of one-on-one time with our Junior or Senior Kindergarten teacher. During this time, the student and teacher will play games, read books, draw pictures and get to know one another while the parents or guardians meet with the Director of Lower School. This meeting helps the School understand a child from the parents’ or guardians’ perspective and allows parents/guardians to gain a better understanding of the School and the IB Primary Years Programme

The School offers a Kindergarten Open House in November of each year for families interested in applying for the following academic year.

Grades 1-6 Admissions

For students applying for entry in Grades 1-6, we engage prospective students and their families in a discussion about goals, expectations and past experiences with school. Our Admissions Committee will review this feedback, along with the student’s report cards.

Prospective students are required to attend a Visit Day during the application process where we welcome the prospective student to spend a day in the classroom with their peers. The prospective student will be paired with a classmate for the day, a current SJK student of the same age and sharing similar interests. An assessment of literacy and numeracy skills is administered during the Visit Day. This experience provides your child with an opportunity to engage in the SJK community and determine whether SJK is the right fit.

The School offers its SJK Information Evening in November for families interested in learning more about the IB Primary Years Programme and IB Middle Years Programme.
