Creativity, Activity and Service Program

Creativity, Activity, Service – A model for success

Imagine a school where teachers are a presence, but students lead the way.

The co-curricular program at SJK is very robust and is modelled after the CAS Programme in the IB Diploma Programme. There are opportunities in the areas of Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) for all students in Grades 6-12. Students are able to exhibit leadership and stay involved through student-driven co-curricular activities. Activities for students include those that are service and experiential based and those that promote innovation, creativity and healthy living.

CAS involves investigating, acting and reflecting on community involvement and activities.
Creativity provides students with the opportunity to explore their sense of original thinking and expression. The forms of expression are limitless; including visual and performing arts, digital design, writing, film, culinary arts, crafts and composition. Students are encouraged to engage in creative endeavours that move them beyond the familiar, broadening their scope from conventional to unconventional thinking.

Activity involves developing lifelong healthy habits related to physical well-being. Pursuits may include individual and team sports, aerobic exercise, dance, outdoor recreation, fitness training and other forms of physical exertion that purposefully contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Students are encouraged to participate at an appropriate level and on a regular basis to provide a genuine challenge and benefit.

Service opportunities allow students to understand their capacity to make a meaningful contribution to their community and society. Students will learn as they identify and address authentic community needs, and the community benefits through mutual collaboration. Students in Grades 7-12 have the opportunity to make social change through active citizenship and volunteerism in local, national and international communities.

CAS and the IB Diploma Programme

CAS is one of the three essential elements that every student must complete as part of the IB Diploma Programme (IB DP). Studied throughout the IB Diploma Programme, CAS involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies. It provides opportunities for self-determination and collaboration with others, fostering a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment from their work. They are required to undertake a CAS Project, which challenges them to show initiative, demonstrate perseverance and develop skills such as collaboration, problem-solving and decision-making.
