A Day In The Life at SJK

A Day In The Life At SJK

SJK's campus is alive with educational experiences that reach far beyond those within the classroom. Our commitment to student engagement and development means that we provide our students with exceptional opportunities to grow, learn and explore. During the school year, expect your child to become excited about all kinds of experiences beyond the classroom. They may discover a new sport, travel to a new part of the world, or join one of several unique campus clubs. SJK strives to provide your child with experiences as unique and exciting as they are.

  • Student Life in Lower School

You start your day dropping off your bag at the Lower School hallway door and racing out to the playground, climbing the Fallen Tree and playing with your friends until your homeroom teacher takes you inside to get settled in. It's time for student-led morning assembly! Grab your sweater and line up to head over to the Chapel. Assemblies are pretty fun - students share announcements, talents and news with the whole Lower School!

Your teacher will continue with a lesson that links to Where We Are in Place and Time, which helps you connect the dots between past civilization to present day life. Before you know it, it's lunchtime. Head down the hall towards Newton House.

You'll enjoy a freshly made meal in the Dining Hall with your classmates, which is prepared by a Red Seal certified chef featuring local ingredients. Afterwards, you can enjoy time outside on the playground again before the afternoon classes start.

It's time for physical education. Grab your house shirt, shorts and running shoes to head to the Gym. You're doing Zumba with a professional instructor that is visiting the School for the day. You've never tried it before, but it's fun and different from sports and other activities you usually do!

After the academic day wraps, you're off to Outdoor Experiential Education until your parents pick you up. This means spending time outdoors and learning about things such as weather patterns, different species that exist on the SJK campus and much more! You head home and are excited about the next day of school already because it means you can learn even more with your classmates and spend more time with your teachers.

  • Student Life in Upper School

You arrive at SJK and walk in through the front doors - you want to drop off your saxophone in the Music room before heading to your locker to get organized for the morning. You have a design class followed by an assembly in the Chapel. You grab textbooks and notebooks to throw them in your backpack and head to the computer lab.

After class, you drop your backpack off in your locker, grab your blazer and make your way to the Chapel. Make a note of announcements that are relevant to you, such as sticking around after the assembly for a quick meeting about a Five Worlds trip to Iceland that you have coming up.

You stroll from the Chapel to the Dining Hall for your morning snack. The fresh muffins are something you look forward to every day! You fuel up and head to your locker to swap out your books for your next two classes - chemistry and math. It's a pretty busy morning, but it goes very quickly.

You and a few friends grab your lunch and take it outside to sit on the Dining Hall patio. It's a great chance to decompress and catch up before heading into the afternoon, which starts with choir practice during your lunch break.

After choir practice wraps, you have one more class and then start CAS period. You'll be canoeing on Chalmers Pond with other students, which is such a unique part of your week! You know that spending time outside is a great balance to the busy classes you had today. It's a great chance to reset at the end of the day.
