Mrs. Karen Baird was born in England and spent her childhood living in many countries around the world before her family settled in South Africa, where she completed her high school years and professional training. Mrs. Baird started her career in education in South Africa and England, prior to immigrating to Canada in 1991. Initially a Junior Kindergarten teacher at SJK, she is now the Director of Teaching & Learning at SJK. Mrs. Baird has 25 years teaching experience and holds Additional Specialist Qualifications in the areas of Reading, Special Education and Educational Leadership, as well as her Ontario Principal's Qualifications. She is also an IB Educator, working for the International Baccalaureate as a PYP Workshop Leader, Consultant and School Site Evaluator within the IB Americas region.
Mrs. Baird believes that all children can learn and that developing confidence and a positive self-esteem provides the foundation for success. Providing hands-on, real experiences allows children to make discoveries and connect new learning in a meaningful way. As a strong believer in the importance of creating a culture of kindness, the warm and caring SJK community is one of her favourite things about the School. She is inspired by the everyday, ordinary miracles around her. Traveling to new destinations is a passion for Mrs. Baird and provides opportunities to pursue her interests in scuba diving, bike riding, swimming, photography and exploring new food and cultures. Mrs. Baird and her husband, Jim live in Guelph and have two amazing children.
