Coronavirus March Break Update For Boarding Parents (February 18, 2020)

Dear Parents of SJK Boarding Students,

As a school community, SJK believes in placing the safety of our students first and that it is important to act responsibly, listen to health officials and follow their expert direction. We continue to carefully monitor the status of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) through trusted health authorities.

We want to reassure you that SJK does not have any cases of Covid-19 on campus or at the boarding residence. Furthermore, our Health Centre at the boarding residence has not observed any symptoms of the illness. We continue to use precautionary measures to lessen our school’s chances of exposure to any airborne, acute respiratory illness.

As of February 11, 2020, the World Health Organization advises that measures to limit the risk of exportation or importation of the disease should be implemented. The government of Canada’s travel advisory to China recommends avoiding non-essential travel and to Hubei Province recommends avoiding all travel. https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/advisories Our local health authorities are requiring anyone who has visited Hubei province to be self-quarantined for 14 days.

With the guidance of health officials in mind, we recommend that our boarding students not travel to China during the March Break holiday (March 14 - March 29, 2020).

Many parents have already communicated with the Head of Boarding, Mrs. Kathy Watt, informing her of your son’s or daughter’s plans for the holidays. We know that many students are planning to stay in Canada but others also have plans to return home to China. With the guidance of avoiding travel to China, could parents please reconsider your son’s or daughter’s plans for the holiday if they planned to return home to China? If you have not yet delivered this information or would like to change your original message, we ask that you please confirm with an email to kathy.watt@sjkeagles.com your child’s plans for the holidays by Friday, February 21, 2020.

We would prefer if families make plans for their children to leave the residence over the break. If this is too difficult for your family, please contact Mrs. Watt to let her know that you are having difficulty making alternate arrangements.

Our hearts go out to those in China, particularly the Hubei Province and the city of Wuhan. Our sincerest thoughts are also extended to anyone suffering as a result of this virus, and to the loved ones of those whose lives have been lost.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Boughton
Head of School
