Welcome to SJK, Ms. Boughton!

Prior to joining SJK as its new Head of School, Ms. Boughton spent 11 years making an impact as Head of School at Elmwood School in Ottawa. She expresses appreciation for the experiences she accumulated and the opportunity that lies ahead at SJK: “I feel gratitude. I feel very thankful for the opportunity to have made a difference in an institution and I’m very fortunate to have that opportunity again here at SJK.”

Having been in education for 26 years, the primary driving force of Ms. Boughton’s career has been the chance to make a difference in the lives of students. That has remained the undercurrent of her career since her first day teaching in the classroom. Ms. Boughton is also inspired by professionals around her: “I’m constantly amazed by the energy, focus and determination of the faculty and staff. It’s a privilege to be able to work alongside people who care about the same things.”

An avid storyteller and former English teacher, Ms. Boughton has been active on social media in her professional life for over a decade. She credits social media platforms as being an ideal medium to tell a story from the unique perspective of a leader. “As Head of School, you see things from a particular perspective, so it’s a great opportunity to share that perspective with other people. It’s a way to help people see who I am as a leader as it provides insight into what I value.”

When asked what it means to be the first female Head of School in the history of SJK, Ms. Boughton confirms that she feels it’s an honour and a privilege. There are a modest number of female Heads of Schools in Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS), so she feels proud to be a part of the vanguard of women in leadership positions in independent schools in Canada. Ms. Boughton embraces the chance to be a role model for all students in the School, as well as other aspiring leaders in the community.

“The sense of community at SJK is what drew me here. It’s the first thing people say about the school, and it really is true. It’s not just something that people say, it’s something that you feel when you walk through the doors. You feel this strong sense of community, connection and collaboration. I’m excited to be here at a wonderful school that I’ve admired from afar. There’s no way to forge a path to the future without knowing the past; I can’t wait to learn more about the community and its history.”
