Music
Music at SJK
The Music Program at SJK provides an enriching experience for students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. The students start with singing, Orff instruments, and rhythm-based movement activities and begin to play an instrument starting in Grade 5. Students will learn the basics of playing their instrument and will eventually become proficient at performing a wide variety of music including both traditional concert band and jazz band music, with instrumental music being a part of the core curriculum through to Grade 8. In Grades 9 and 10, students can select instrumental as an elective. The goals of the program are to foster a love of music, engage students with a variety of musical styles and cultures, and to provide students with the chance to apply their learning in a variety of performance contexts.
Along with music as an important part of the curriculum, in partnership with Music in the Schools, SJK offers private music instruction on site for piano, violin, saxophone, guitar and voice with top local musicians as the teachers.
Other co-curricular activities include Jazz Band and String Ensemble. Jazz Band is a weekly club open to students in Grades 7 to 12. As well, the String Ensemble is a great place for students who are taking private lessons outside of school and are looking to join an ensemble. SJK Strings meets weekly to rehearse a variety of music for school events and festival performances. This year members will be travelling to the CIS Music Festivals in Toronto, as well as the Kiwanis Music Festival in Kitchener. The String Ensemble is a great opportunity for students with a love of bowed strings to come together to make beautiful music.

Choral Music Program
Given SJK's tradition as a chorally-driven school, choral music remains an active part of music programming at the School. Students have the opportunity to be involved in choral ensembles including the Primary Choir, Junior Choir, and Kilmarnock Singers (Senior Choir). There are many opportunities for students to perform within the School and the larger community in the surrounding areas, such as during the annual Conference of Independent Schools Music Festival (CISMF) at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto every spring.
