Remote Learning: A Chance to Discover New Skills

Joe Bettencourt
On March 29, I felt like I do the day before a new school year begins. I looked forward to connecting with students while being a little nervous not knowing how it would go. On March 30, I awoke and made sure I was in the virtual classroom early. I waited patiently for students to arrive. Magically, one by one, students began arriving.
Some with pets, some with breakfast, some with weaker internet connections, all with smiles on their faces. The students were excited to see one another and to hear that there was a plan for moving forward. When I shared that tomorrow's homeroom would include a virtual version of their favourite game, 7UP, students cheered. They were also glad to hear that homeroom meetings would move to 1:00 p.m. and give them a little extra time in the morning to get organized.

Speaking about options, I urged my students to make the most of the learning opportunity these extenuating circumstances are providing. I believe remote learning is a chance for students to learn new skills and try different modes of learning. They can do it. We are fortunate to have a great SJK community to support us in this journey.
