Launching MYP Personal Projects

Rebecca Dufour
Students in the final year of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) identify an area of interest and then craft an inquiry-based project that serves to showcase the skills they have developed over the four years of the MYP.
This year, I'll be joining them in the project creation process.
This year-long time frame is a special time in a student’s journey at SJK where they are genuinely provided with the creative freedom to explore and follow a personal passion called the Personal Project.

This week, Grade 9 students were given their first look at what engagement in this process will be like for them. As the Personal Project Coordinator, I have launched a video series that will have students follow me as I document my own personal project journey. I will be learning more about the honey bee and hopefully produce a jar of honey with the help of my bees over the coming months. As a way to model and hopefully inspire students to embrace their own passion, the video series will document each stage of the Personal Project process.

While learning remotely, students at SJK are encouraged to go deep into their learning and there is no better opportunity to go deep than when given the chance to explore your passion!

As a parent/guardian, you can help to support your child through the development of their personal project by showing interest, asking questions, and helping them to persevere over the long term. You can share your experience with developing your personal passions and you can also ask your child to review the personal project website with you. It is available through your child’s onSJK account or you can contact me directly for a shared link.

Please stay tuned for the next video installment on my Personal Project journey!
