Reflection: Teaching Chemistry Remotely

Sarah Regli
Ms. Sarah Regli has been committed to her efforts of carrying over the chemistry lab experience for her DP students. Several of her videos have graced our social media channels in the past weeks. When it came to explaining electrochemistry, Ms. Regli decided to elevate her lab videos to the next level for illustrative purposes.
"Having students do lab work when they are at home is quite tricky. The closest I have been able to get so far is to demonstrate small laboratory activities to students in order to explain concepts. Many have commented that this helps them visualize the concepts they are about to learn and helps them to connect the lab experience to the real world, which is great feedback for me as a teacher that is adjusting to remote learning as much as the students are!

Electrochemistry is a difficult topic to cover in chemistry, but an important one as it teaches about the construction and operation of batteries. Batteries are things we use every day, particularly in our remote learning life, so being able to understand how they work is really important.

Yesterday, I went through any materials I had at home (I'm a chemist and my husband a physicist, so I have more at my disposal than most) and constructed a model of a simple battery. To be honest, I doubted it would work at all, but to my surprise it did!

Here is my video showcasing a day of creativity and hard work from home."
