Dr. Chris Cigolea, originally from Romania, moved with his wife and son to Canada at the age of 23. Dr. Cigolea was already an established musician in Romania and while apprehensive about moving to a new country, with its foreign language and unknown lifestyle, his passion for music propelled him forward. He holds a master's degree in music education, a master's in music performance and a PhD in music performance and conducting.
Prior to joining SJK, Dr. Cigolea taught music at Fern Hill private school in Oakville for 10 years before becoming a music instructor at the University of Guelph. Additionally, he is a principal with the Guelph Symphony Orchestra and Music Director and Conductor of the Guelph Youth Symphony Orchestra and Guelph Concert Band. He has also been able to travel through North America and Europe with various orchestras as either trumpet performer or conductor.
Dr. Cigolea wanted to be a teacher so that he could share his experiences and knowledge with the next generation of musicians. He considers every day to be a memorable moment and finds satisfaction in seeing the constant improvement of his students. He loves the energy that the SJK community radiates. He is enjoying developing the school's instrumental music program and the unique opportunity to work with students in Grades 5 – 10. One of Dr. Cigolea’s goals is to make SJK the best jazz program in Canada. He enjoys soccer and fishing, but above all else considers his job to be his hobby and passion.
