Meet Amelia Canto, SJK's new Director of Advancement
SJK is excited to welcome Ms. Amelia Canto to the community as she joined the School as the Director of Advancement on January 6, 2020. Ms. Canto brings varied funraising experience to this role, ranging from post-secondary institutions to healthcare sectors, to now focusing on the K-12 education landscape.
Born and raised in Cambridge (Galt), Ontario, Ms. Canto's career in advancement and alumni relations took her to Toronto and Edmonton, Alberta before returning to Ontario this winter.
Ms. Canto’s goal is to ultimately enhance and grow the SJK community by building momentum toward the vision for the School. She enjoys collaborations and projects where she can connect with people in the community.
Ms. Canto explains how she was drawn to SJK’s promising future. “I’m thrilled to be back in this region, as I have always seen the tremendous potential here. SJK remains the premier independent school to attend. The spirit of the School’s founders is still here, and it is evolving and growing in ways that will tap SJK into the different opportunities in the surrounding communities that are being developed around us,” she explains.
Ms. Canto is excited to join the leadership team headed by the recently appointed Head of School, Ms. Cheryl Boughton, a phenomenal new leader for SJK. She sees that Ms. Boughton brings immense expertise and a fresh perspective to the School. “Between our alumni community, current families, past families, faculty and staff, there’s a driving will and focus on the needs of the School and the community. It’s a solid foundation to build on in terms of achieving a long-range vision while delivering an outstanding student experience today. Frankly, I believe this is the beginning of a new era for SJK.”
When asked what she wishes for every student at SJK, she acknowledges that each student is on a personal journey. “I see SJK as a place that facilitates learning in a way that supports students as they each progress on their individual educational path... I see SJK students making lifelong friends along the way because there’s an incredible sense of family here.” Through her role, Ms. Canto aims to create more alumni opportunities and events for reconnecting with SJK. “There’s a lot to be said about the fact that so many people find SJK to be a second home. The students, faculty and staff that they get to know here, often become part of their extended family.”
We invite you to get to know Ms. Canto in person or digitally. Feel free to drop in for a coffee chat if you’re on campus or drop her a line. She looks forward to getting acquainted with the SJK community!
