Mrs. Tracey Duldhardt, Chair of Mathematics Department
Over the past couple of months, we have had two more contests running in the Upper School.
In February, our Grades 7 and 8 students participated in the Canadian National Mathematics League contest (CNML). The top five scores in each grade are used to form a school team score. Congratulations to each participant and especially the following students who scored in the top five in their grade.
Grade 7 - Team Score: 95
1st Place: Matthew S.
2nd Place: Ronin T.
3rd Place: Caelyn W.
Tied for 4th Place: Beatrix C., Calvin C-K., Anna Pr., Tiger Q.
Grade 8 - Team Score: 68
1st Place: Corson W.
2nd Place: Riya D., Nick B.
4th Place: Raymond Y.
Tied for 5th Place: Nyle D., Sofina N., Andrew P-V., Valerie Z.
Also in February, Grades 9, 10, and 11 students were given the opportunity to participate in their grade-level University of Waterloo contest. At SJK, we also frequently have many students in Grades 7 & 8 complete the Grade 9 contest.
The University of Waterloo recognizes each student who scores in the top 25% of all contest participants with a certificate. The top student from each school is awarded a medal. Further to this, the top three student scores in each contest are added for our SJK Team Score.

Fermat Contest (Grade 11)

Top Score at SJK: Noah S.
No other students placed in the top 25%; however, Vivian X. and Stephen W. scored in 2nd and 3rd place respectively for SJK and contributed to our Grade 11 Team Score.
Our team rankings within the region were quite impressive this year. There were 26 schools in the region who participated, a number that is very consistent from year to year.
Pascal: SJK Placed 2nd
Cayley: SJK Placed 5th
Fermat: SJK Placed 10th
Further to this, we have some phenomenal provincial results to share. Our Grade 9 team placed 38th in the province. Based on their individual scores, Joyce ranked 4th in the region and 90th in the province. William (Grade 8) ranked 7th in the region and 157th provincially. There were over 7,200 students in Ontario who wrote this contest, so these are truly remarkable results! Special congratulations to both Joyce and William!
There are only two UW contests remaining for this school year. The Euclid Contest (Grade 11 and 12) will be written next week. The Gauss Contest will be written by all Grade 7 and 8 students in May.
Great thinking, Eagles!
