As the only accredited IB World Continuum School in Southwestern Ontario, St. John’s-Kilmarnock School (SJK) offers enriched educational programming for students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. Established in 1972, the School is located on a beautiful 40-acre natural campus and is proudly the leading co-educational independent school in the Waterloo and surrounding region.
At SJK, students exceed expectations in an environment where they are engaged, understood and supported. Students learn through inquiry-based instruction where they are encouraged to reach their fullest potential. The quality of contextual learning is one of the aspects that make SJK and the IB education powerful and distinct.
The best way to get to know more about our vibrant learning community is to come for a visit. We invite you and your family to come and experience SJK.
SJK is a place where students create and explore as they grow into young adults ready for the world beyond our gates. Every SJK community member has a story to share about what makes the School so special to them. We welcome you to visit us to discover the possibilities that SJK has in store for you.
Angel West ‘19 (pictured, right) completed her first year of Media Arts Studies at Conestoga College earlier this spring and decided to join her mother, Suzi West, on an environmental cleanup project, removing litter from major roadways around Kitchener. Suzi has always been a firm believer of taking care of the planet and leaving each space she occupies in a better state than she found it.
"The arts have been one of the areas most profoundly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Stratford Festival has suspended its 2020 season, New York City's Broadway is dark. Creative artists worldwide have found ways to provide creative comfort and inspiration. The show, as they say, must go on. The SJK Arts Department has explored ways to showcase the talents of our students in this new virtual space in which we are living at present."
"Like so many companies out there, we are trying to do whatever we can to help our local communities. It’s been challenging for universities and schools. I think that they’ve managed it extremely well, moving quickly to remote learning. You’ve got to focus on those positives, keep morale strong and know that we’re going to get through this. We’re going to learn from it, we’re going to be stronger from it."
A Community of Collaborators
The excitement towards each school day is palpable at SJK; the community aspect is what brings SJK to life for our students, faculty and staff. Being an SJK student means leaning in to curiosity and engaging with classmates to develop shared experiences that create lasting bonds.
The SJK Science Fair is our annual showcase of learning in the areas of science, technology, and mathematics. This pillar of the SJK experience has endured for over 40 years, engaging students from Lower School and Upper School in the pursuit of scientific inquiry. The 43rd annual SJK Science Fair will be fully virtual this year. Visit this website to view our digital showcase of student projects with digital display boards, video presentations from the student, and online feedback forms.
