Our Donor Impacts

From our School’s inspired beginnings around a kitchen table in Elora, SJK has been built by its community. From drawing up plans for the original school site, to funding the facilities on each campus, to planting the trees we now see along the driveway, the tradition of giving—of one’s time, expertise and charitable support—has been essential to our growth and success.

From the time that St. John’s School for boys (a predecessor to St. John’s-Kilmarnock School) was founded in Elora in 1972, charitable contributions brought the dream of an independent school to life. Without access to provincial funding, the first school, located in the ‘White House’ on Price Street, was purchased thanks to donations from SJK's Founders and parents. This was also the case with St. John’s sister school, St. Margaret’s, which began to collaborate with St. John’s in 1975. Ten years later, amalgamation talks with the two schools were initiated.

By the late 1970s, a search began for a new campus to accommodate the creation of a Senior School. A new, permanent site for the School was also under consideration. Although leaving Elora meant leaving the School’s roots, the Board eventually decided to establish a co-educational Senior School in a more urban area.

In 1988, with contributions from the SJK community and families who were enrolled at that time, sod was turned for the current campus in Breslau. The campuses of SJK were united at the new campus in January 1990 and officially opened in May of the same year.

The current campus includes the original school, and the addition of a Middle Years building, Music Room, Lower School classrooms, a Chapel and a Gym, which were completed in 2001 and 2003, respectively. In 2012, the Boathouse was added to the campus to support outdoor education. In 2016, the School completed the construction of  Newton House, a new Learning Commons and Multipurpose/Dining Hall.

A tradition of giving has made the existing campus what it is today. Without support from our SJK families, our campus simply would not exist.
